ACC Alumni Day in the Park – Saturday, April 14 – 11:00am-3:00pm

ACC Alumni Picnic and Fundraiser
Saturday, April 14th, 11:00am-3:00pm2225
Andrew Zilker Rd
Austin, TX 78746

Hokies,

Please join me Saturday, April 14th for a day in the park with the rest of our fellow Austin ACC alumni. We have reserved a pavilion in Zilker Park that comes with plenty of parking, gated play areas for kids, and tons of space for a number of different activities and games. There is so much room for activities! We’ll be setting up cornhole (bean-bag toss), ladder golf, bocce, etc. for everyone to enjoy and compete against other schools. This event will be great for alumni of all ages and our families so please take this opportunity to stop by and meet some fellow Hokies in the area. This should be a great mix of both younger and wiser alumni, both new to the area and locals.

We will also be raising money for Austin Sunshine Camps (description below). This is a great chance to help raise money and awareness for an excellent program benefiting Austin youth.

There will be limited food provided (basically just A LOT of hot dogs)
so we are asking that everyone contribute a dish or drink of your choice to the pot.

To recap:

Thanks,

Austin YMBL Sunshine Camps was started in 1928 by the Young Men’s Business League (YMBL) of Austin. The YMBL set out to positively affect the lives of youth living below the poverty line. We serve more than 850 youth each year from Bastrop, Hayes, Travis and Williamson Counties. Since 1928, ASC has served 44,500 campers and students in Central Texas. The students and families served by ASC are living below the poverty line (defined as a family of four with an annual income of $22,050). All of our programs are completely free of charge to participants. Austin Sunshine Camps is best known for our namesake programs, the camps at Zilker Park and Lake Travis.

Brand VT License Plates in Texas

The Texas Chapters of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association have an opportunity to brand collegiate license plates right here in the Lone Star State.

This could be a good source of revenue to support local VT student scholarships, so we want to gauge interest. Please help us by filling out our seven-question survey by Sunday, February 26.

VT vs. Duke Basketball Feb 2

Hey gang,

It’s time for another installment of Hokie basketball. This week, the Hokies will face an uphill battle as they take on the Duke Blue Devils in Cassel Coliseum. They may have the Olympic Team USA’s coach on their side, but we’ve got a raucous fanbase the Blue Devils will never forget. Especially Greg Paulus. So get your Reeboks on and head down to Bar 96 to catch the game this Thursday at 6:00. Schedule it in your palm pilot or whatever the cool kids use these days because a win here could be one for the books.

All-ACC Fundraising and Social Event on December 10th

Hokies,

Alumni from all 12 Atlantic Coast Conference universities are gathering on Saturday, December 10th at Opal Divines on West 6th Street from 1:00-3:00pm for a social event and competitive fundraiser to benefit a favorite local charity, CARY (the Council on At-Risk Youth). All participants will receive food and drink specials with a minimum donation of $5 (which will get you a wristband to get in on deals throughout the day). After Opal Divine’s, the group will move to other locations every hour on the hour until 8:00pm. So there is plenty of opportunity to show your school spirit either all day or just during one leg of the event. There is no college football that day so it is a great opportunity for alumni of all ages to meet/network and to help CARY, a charity doing their part to improve the lives of young Austinites through education.

Virginia Tech’s Alumni Chapter and the other 11 ACC chapters in Austin will be spending the month leading up to the event raising donations. Donations can be made in person during the next two* watch parties, online at www.councilonatriskyouth.org, or at the door of the event. If you are looking for a tax-deductible donation, please donate online (designating your money is from a Hokie). Cash and checks will be accepted at the door of Opal Divine’s or by me throughout the day. The school who raises the most money will get bragging rights for the next all-ACC event as this will be the first of many.

Again, the All-ACC Alumni Group will be meeting at Opal Divines (700 West 6th Street) from 1:00-3:00pm with plans to visit other establishments in the area afterward. To be part of the event (and receive great food and drink specials), a minimum donation of $5 is requested.

Tentative schedule for Saturday, December 10th on West 6th Street:
Opal Divine’s 1:00-3:00pm
Star Bar 3:00-4:00pm
Molotov 4:00-5:00pm
219 West 5:00-6:00pm
The Dogwood 6:00-7:00pm
Kung Fu Saloon 7:00-8:00pm

If you have any questions, please contact me at kiel.dolence@gmail.com.

See you there,
Kiel

*hopefully three watch parties.

VT vs. Georgia Tech Thursday @ 7pm

After jumping up two spots in the rankings to #10, the Hokies are ready once again to take the field this week. So come on out to Lavaca St. Bar (http://www.lavacastreet.com/) this Thursday night at 7:00pm for yet another crucial game as our team takes on #21 Georgia Tech in Atlanta. The ACC division standings are complex at the moment, but in a nutshell, if we win this game then we own our destiny and get a little closer to another ACC championship game.

Word around the campfire is that some of our Yellow Jackets friends, still riding high on their win over Clemson, will be in attendance. They wanted to gather at their home bar, but we convinced them to come to ours. So I exhort you to join us and help outnumber them.
